coondoggie writes “NASA this will show off the first mock up of its Orion space capsule ahead of the capsule’s first emergency astronaut escape system test. NASA said it will jettison the full-size structural model off a simulated launch pad at the US Army’s White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. The launch escape vehicle sits atop the Orion capsule which is slated to be bolted on an Ares rocket. The escape automobile is made up of three solid rocket motors as well as separation mechanisms and canards, and should offer the crew an escape ability in the event of an emergency during launch, according to NASA.”

Dr. Eggman writes “The Associated Press brings us news of a flood in the Grand Canyon. This flood is no ordinary flood, however. This is a man-made flood released from the Glen Canyon Dam. The Dam is releasing four to five times its normal amount of water over the course of a three day artificial flood. Scientists are conducting this massive experiment in order to document and better understand the complex relation of the aquatic habitats, natural floods, and the sediment they bring. Floods no longer bring sediment to these parts of the canyon as the Dam keeps it locked up and released in small, drawn out intervals. The Dam prevents the floods from bringing the sediments into replenish the sandbars and grant the river to maintain its warm, murky habitat rather than a cool, clear one. It is thought that this cool clear environment brought on by the dam is responsible for helping to extinguish 4 species of fish and push 2 more towards the brink. It is hoped that this terra-reformation experiment will positively impact the habitat and fish populations, warranting further artificial floods at an increased rate of each one to two years rather than the time span between the two previous floods and this one of 8 and 4 years.”

alexj33 writes “Will humans ever really go to Mars? Let’s face it, the obstacles are quite daunting. Not only are there numerous, difficult, technical issues to overcome, but the political will and perseverance of any one nation to undertake such an arduous task is massive. However, one former NASA engineer believes a human mission to Mars is quite possible, and such an event would unify the world as never before. But Jim McLane’s proposal includes a couple of major caveats: the trip to Mars should be one-way, and have a crew of only one person.”

Nine Inch Nails LogoOver the weekend, Trent Reznor — the brains behind Nine Inch Nails — released his latest creation, Ghosts I-IV, over the internet. The first nine songs of the 36-song album (nearly 150 minutes in length) are available for free, and there are a number of other options for those willing to pay for the latest from the Pretty Hate Machine artist. For $5, for example, you can download the full album, which comes with a 40-page PDF and “digital extras.”

There are other buy options as well, the highest-tier of which is a $300 “Ultra-Deluxe Limited Edition Package,” which includes: high-quality downloads, two CDs, a data DVD, a Blu-ray high-definition DVD, and assorted extras. And? It’s signed by Mr. Reznor himself. Available to the first 2,500 buyers only, the $300 package sold out in two days. This represents a gross of three quarters of a million dollars in just 48 hours, and that doesn’t even account for the other, more inexpensive packages that fans have likely snatched up.

This was Reznor’s second foray into the cyber-release of his music. Last November 1, he posted a collaboration album with Saul Williams for free on the Internet. Those desiring a higher-quality format could donate $5.

These are definitely some interesting times for e-commerce mega site eBay Inc. (NASDAQ: EBAY). In the past few weeks, the site has been under attack from some of its sellers who have launched a strike against the site in response to recent changes. While eBay denies any impact from the strike, there are some out there who just aren’t buying it.

At the root of the current situation are changes made by eBay over the past month that have left its users frustrated to say the least. The core reason for the frustration relates to eBay’s decision to lower its listing fees but at the same time raise its final sale fees. This is being seen as a direct slap in the face to the site’s more successful sellers. Also adding to the current resentment is the decision to hold certain PayPal payments by up to 21 days in an effort to fight fraudulent activity on the site. As if those two things were not enough, the site went forward in changing its practice of allowing sellers to leave negative feedback on buyers.

As you can envision, sellers were not happy and launched a sellers’ strike that they hoped would convince the company to roll back their changes. Depending on who you listen to, the strike has either had a significant impact on auction listings, or no effect whatsoever.

eBay is of course, denying any impact from the strike. eBay points to the fact that it had launched a massive cost slicing campaign right before the strike got under way which had temporarily inflated its number of listings. As a result, the decline in listings was a more a result of their campaign coming to close than it was from the strike.

But could there be something a little more sinister taking place on the site? Rumors are definitely swirling that the site has actually been padding its numbers with fake item listings. eBay wouldn’t dare do such a thing, would it? It has already admitted that a “bug” in the system did in fact insert some fake listings into the site’s database. The question is, was this really a bug, or did the site knowingly inflate its listings?

Upset eBay users are convinced that there is some funny business going on over at eBay, and one unhappy user has gone so far as to collect as much data as he or she can to send to the FTC for investigation. Another user has documented what he interprets as shady auction listings in a video that he has shared with the world via YouTube.

Not only are users voicing their concerns over the inflated listing numbers, they’re also claiming the eBay has been censoring and deleting critical posts on its popular message board.

So, what exactly is going on over at eBay? A site that gained its big popularity by creating a large interactive community is now in the situation where it is being policed by that same community. The question is, which side is blowing hot air? eBay itself, or disgruntled eBay users?

Let us hear what you think. Which side do you believe?
