artemis67 writes “This past week, President Bush signed the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act, which would protect people from being discriminated against by health insurers or employers on the basis of their genetic information. ‘the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA). GINA is the first and only federal legislation that’ll provide protections against discrimination based on an individual’s genetic information in health insurance coverage and employment settings.’”

Now that the solar panels have been deployed, the Mars Phoenix Lander has begun sending back photos of the red planet to the hungry space geeks of earth. In just a few weeks the claw will deploy and they’ll begin digging a hole. The scientists anticipate to use the dirt to construct a little sand castle which they will defend with several GI Joe action figures, and a bald barbie stolen from their sisters. Oh, and maybe find water or bacteria.

stoolpigeon writes “Reuters reports on a Harvard Medical School study on sleep patterns and how they relate to food. Researchers already knew that the sleep patterns of mice would change to match the opportunity to feed, but they did not know the mechanism that enabled the change. To find out, they looked for the part of the brain that was involved. They bred mice without a certain master gene that regulates the body’s clock, and then targeted various parts of the brain with the gene, delivered in the shell of a virus. The results might, among other things, provide a new method for preparing to deal with jet lag: ‘A period of fasting with no food at all for about 16 hours is enough to engage this [alternate body] clock,’ the lead researcher said. The study appears in the journal Science.”
