chromatic writes “Imagine managing a million lines of code to send over seven hundred pounds of equipment millions of miles through space to land safely on Mars and perform dozens of experiments. You’ve C, 128 MB of RAM, and very few opportunities to retry if you get it wrong. O’Reilly News interviewed Peter Gluck, project software engineer for NASA’s Mars Phoenix Lander, about the process of writing software and managing these constraints — and why you’re unlikely to see the source code to the project any time soon.”

Smivs writes with this snippet from an article at the BBC, well worth reading: “Scientists have made an important advance in their efforts to predict earthquakes, the journal Nature states. A team of US researchers has detected stress-induced changes in rocks that occurred hours before two small tremors in California’s San Andreas Fault. The observations used sensors lowered down holes drilled into the quake zone. The team says we’re a long way from routine tremor forecasts but the latest findings hold out hope that such services might be possible one day.”

schliz writes with the stub of a disheartening article at IT News: “Hackers are deluging web users with malware-laden spam claiming that World War III has started following a US invasion of Iran. Security experts warned [yesterday] that spam emails with subject lines including ‘Third World War has begun,’ ‘20000 US Soldiers in Iran,’ and ‘US Army crossed Iran’s borders’ have been intercepted. The emails contain links to a malicious webpage that displays what appears to be a video player showing the mushroom cloud of a nuclear explosion.”

Corrupt writes “I’ve admired Obama, but I never confused him with a genuine progressive leader. This day I don’t admire him at all. His collapse on FISA is unforgivable. The only thing Obama has going for him this week is that McCain is matching him misstep for misstep.”

Read the financial media and all you’ll hear about the ideal way to invest for your retirement is to buy ETFs and hold them. Well for the last nine months, investors have watched their savings plummet by more than 20% following that bit of advice. Even though we’re still in the midst of the ETF growth explosion, it might be that with all the market volatility, active management of funds is the way to go.

According to a report in Bloomberg: ” Hedge funds declined by an average 0.7 percent in June, bringing the year-to-date loss to 0.75 percent, data compiled by Hedge Fund Research Inc. shows. It’s the worst begin to a year since the Chicago-based firm began tracking returns in 1990.”

Equity hedge funds lost about 3.3% during the first half of the year. That thoroughly crushes the S&P 500 which dropped 19% from the October peak. This actually mean that the hedge funds are doing what they are supposed to do and be a hedge against falling markets.

It will be interesting to see returns for the mutual fund industry. If actively managed mutual funds were on average able to seriously outperform the broader indices, then I think investors will begin taking a real look at moving away from ETF investing and back into more traditional actively managed accounts.

How many buy and hold investors wish that they would have only lost 3.3% so far this year?

Smivs writes “US scientists have found evidence that water was held in the Moon’s interior, challenging some elements of the theory of how Earth’s satellite formed. The Moon is thought to have been created in a violent collision between Earth and another planet-sized object. Scientists thought the heat from this impact had vaporised all the water. But a new study in Nature magazine shows water was delivered to the lunar surface from the interior in volcanic eruptions three billion years ago. This suggests that water has been a part of the Moon since its early existence.”
