Election officials in northern Chicago want to know why voter registration material was sent to Princess, a dead goldfish. “I am just stunned at the level of people compromising the integrity of the voting process,” said Lake County Clerk Willard Helander, a Republican, who stated she has spotted problems with nearly 1,000 voter registrations this year. Beth Nudelman, who owned Princess, said the fish may have got on a mailing list because the family once filled in her name when they got a second phone line for a personal. When will we recognize a goldfish’s right to vote?

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) stepped up its market share in Q3, lifting its PC sales to almost 10% of all Computers sold, according to research firm Gartner, Inc. For Apple, this is great news — it’s steadily taking sales from bigger competitors Dell, Inc. (NASDAQ: DELL) and global PC sales leader Hewlett-Packard Corp. (NYSE: HPQ). Its laptop Personal computers continue to sell like hotcakes, even with prices that are much higher than the discount prices you would normally see on Windows-based laptop PCs.
Even though Apple CEO Steve Jobs said last week that the company won’t be getting into the “netbook” business (tiny notebook Personal computers with limited features), a Gartner research analyst said the company could be in trouble for not having a product to address this market. I think Apple is right here, though; just because there is a market doesn’t mean Apple needs to play in it. The laptop PC industry continues to try and find the next massive niche so that product segments like fully-functional laptop Computers won’t see decelerating growth. When there is a lack of demand, create it; that must be the PC industry’s rallying call.
With Apple releasing quarterly earnings in just over an hour from now, my prediction is that the current quarter’s results will reflect a company that’s timing its product releases, refreshes and entire product line transitions with great precision. It has shown that it can grow market share without being involved in trends that others create. Rather, it creates its own trends and gives birth to new industries as a result.

sash writes “From the fresh press release: ‘Investigations at CERN following a large helium leak into sector 3-4 of the Large Hadron Collider tunnel have confirmed that cause of the incident was a faulty electrical connection between two of the accelerator’s magnets. This resulted in mechanical damage and release of helium from the magnet cold mass into the tunnel. Proper safety procedures were in force, the safety systems performed as expected, and no one was put at risk. Adequate spare components are in hand to ensure that the LHC is able to restart in 2009, and measures to prevent a similar incident in the future are being put in place.’”

For speculators, Martin Weiss has uncovered a stock that benefits from rising home foreclosures. In the higher risk section of his The Safe Money Report he looks at Lender Processing Services (NYSE: LPS).
“We have a new speculative pick: Lender Processing Services. This company was spun off from Fidelity National Information Services a couple of months ago.
“It is the biggest outsourcing firm in the business of processing home loan defaults and foreclosures.
“As you might imagine, that business is booming due to the huge flood of troubled mortgages — revenues in the company’s default services unit soared 90% to $197.2 million in the second quarter from a year earlier.
“LPS also has a division that helps investors, banks and other clients model prepayments, defaults and other characteristics of mortgage-related securities.
“With everyone trying to figureout the value of all the troubled paper out there, the demand for those services should also ramp up. We accentuate, however, that this is a speculative play.”

Matt_dk writes “This series of images show Phoenix’s telltale instrument waving in the Martian wind. Documenting the telltale’s movement helps mission scientists and engineers determine what the wind is like on Mars. On the day these images were taken, one of the images seemed to be ‘out-of-phase’ with other images, possibly indicating a dust devil occurrence.”
